FUCK HOW MANY TIMES DOES THIS HAVE TO BE SAID BEFORE PEOPLE GET IT? IT’S NOT LIKE WE HAVE DIALECTS AND ACCENTS OR ANYTHING.

LIKE SERIOUSLY THERE ARE PEOPLE OUT THERE WHO ONLY ENCOUNTERED ‘GIF’ THROUGH TEXT AND READ IT AS HAVING A HARD /G/ AND THERE ARE OTHERS WHO READ IT AS HAVING A SOFT /G/ OR HEARD WHAT THE GUY WANTED ITS PRONUNCIATION TO BE AND CHANGED IT ACCORDINGLY. BUT THAT DOESN’T MEAN THE HARD /G/ PRONUNCIATION IS ANY LESS VALID BECAUSE REAL PEOPLE USE BOTH AND THEY’RE BOTH MUTUALLY INTELLIGIBLE. FUCKIN’ A PEOPLE.

NOT TO MENTION THAT, YEAH, THERE ARE LANGUAGES THAT WOULD HAVE THE NATURAL PHONOLOGICAL CONSTRUCTION THAT MAKES THE SOFT /G/ OCCUR BEFORE AN /I/ OR /E/. BUT THAT DOESN’T NECESSARILY APPLY TO ENGLISH WHERE WE HAVE ‘GIFT.’

GOD DAMN THIS NEEDS TO STOP BEING A THING TO BE DEBATED ABOUT. THERE’S MORE IMPORTANT THINGS TO TALK ABOUT THAN HOW TO PRONOUNCE A GODDAMNED ACRONYM.
